re: Scapegoats

Assuming "order" is an end, and the means are unimportant, keeping "order" is easy. Just start killing. Saddam kept order by killing, suppression, genocide, and ecological destruction. That's how Yugoslavia and other tyrannies were kept quiet. You don't hear much noise from slave states.

On the other hand, Americans have hysterics if a U.S. soldier abuses the Koran of a war prisoner.

Had we leveled Fallujah the day after those four people were murdered, or used the same techniques used in WWII to eliminate military opposition, there would not be an insurgency. The anti-war people would have blown a gasket.

I constantly hear about how there weren't any insurgents in Germany and Japan after the war. Please try and remember what the Allies DID to Germany and Japan.

We are fighting the politest war in human history. It's costing American lives. On the other hand, far fewer Iraqi civilians have died than would have if we had used more conventional suppression techniques. Maybe this is a valid tradeoff. Maybe not.

Check all the surveys of Iraqis. Damn few want Saddam back.
