Size matters not ... in space
5 foot 2 is very good for fitting inside the Vostok spacecraft.
All Mercury astronauts had to be under 6 feet tall to fit in the
even less spacious US craft. I believe Gus Grissom was the shortest
at 5 foot 9 inches tall.
Space engineers building the Gemini craft based the seat and cabin
sizes on Grissom, as he was considered among the most helpful of the
astronauts when it came to designing the Mercury Mark 2. Some of
the taller astronauts were a bit uncomfortable in the Gemini, thanks
in part to Gus.
