I've often wondered if it were wise to build a manned spacecraft with wings and wheels rather than a heatshield and parachutes.

The wings are extremely penalizing (mass and dead weight throughout the entire flight except the last 5 minutes) but a capsule is small, can stay a long time in space, lands vertically....
