I hate to be such a pessimist...
...but if there is energy in the ground, we will use it up. Regardless of the outcome.
Nuclear is an ok alternative, but we have to come up with a better solution to dealing with the waste than putting it in a shed by the reactors. I would relax the (absurd) requirement that any waste storage solution has to be good for hundreds of thousands of years. I think that our storage should include the assumption of continuing stewardship on our part, to keep the stuff safe and separated from the environment. And somebody has to bite the bullet and let it be done in their state.
