Hi ER, and a sincere welcome to HZ.
I agree and have said it before, we need to enforce our existing immigration laws.
In addition to enforcing our current laws we need to change the current requirements of employers who hire legal guest workers. With the current hiring requirements employers are required to provide housing and transportation to and from the job site for the legal guest workers they hire. That’s a large expense for the employer and the main reason employers hire illegal immigrants who end up receiving the same hourly wage as a legal immigrant but find there own housing and transportation. I think it is an unfair policy demanded of the employer.
If an employer hires a US citizen for the same job they don’t have to provide housing and transportation for the worker, so where’s the encouragement to hire a legal guest worker?
Another thing I don’t understand is, I heard that 25% of Ag. workers are illegal. Who are the 80%? Somebody is willing to work that is not illegally in the country so the nobody will do the work falls flat. Just like the construction industry in which US citizens have lost jobs to illegal workers. Has the cost of new housing gone down or even stabilizing because of their cheap labor? Not in my area. I have doubts of how high the cost of food would rise if employers stop hiring illegal workers.
We have dug our own hole and need to fix it with changing some hiring requirements IMO.
