Ozone CYA

Getting back to the nose-pulling around here...

Scientists say that the ozone hole may disappear by 2050.

Well, unless it doesn't:

Some, however, have suggested the hole won't heal until much later because old refrigerators and air-conditioning systems — many in the United States and Canada — are still releasing ozone-killing chemicals. Both countries curbed those chemicals in newer products.

...Chlorofluorocarbon levels in the earth's atmosphere have been declining since the mid-1990s due to international efforts to reduce emissions.

Yet the ozone hole for 2005 was one of the largest on record.

I guess we'll see what happens. If the CFCs peter out in the atmosphere over the following decades, but the ozone hole stays pretty much the way it is, then what?

Fortunately for the scientists, that can has been kicked a long way down the road, and the ground has been laid that no matter what the hole does, there'll be a backup theory.
