Not everyone out there who is claiming concern for rights of dissent and the right of privacy in security issues is being entirely honest about their motives.
In my experience, most people I've actually known with a "question authority" bumper sticker were socialists of one stripe or another, and would be perfectly happy with an all-powerful authority if it was their authority.
