There was a local restaurant chain in the Miami area called Wolfies. Wolfie Schwartz brought the pastrami recipe to Miami from New York---and he brought a lot more.
I loved the gigantic stacked sandwichs and tall cake deserts they served there. But the thing I will always remember about Wolfie's is my experience of my first encounter with the holocaust. We had just studied about the holocaust in school at highly anti-semetic Ft. Lauderdale school. I had a wonderful bowl of borscht with extra sour cream and a pastrami 5" at center stacked sandwich with a Dr. Brown soda. When I went to the register to pay, the cashier reached out to take my money and I saw the numbers tatooed on her arm.
Suddenly my school lessons gained a reality. I could personally identify the holocaust was not numbers, but people with faces, hopes and dreams. Since then I have encountered many more survivors with the numbers on their arms and at each encounter I feel a sense of shame and sadness that I am of a species that could visit such horror on each other.
Thanks for the Non Sequitur, for me it is a potent reminder of being involved in mankind.
