The only way it will ever happen

If space travel ever becomes a business involving asteroid mining or gas giant helium scooping, colonization will become a reality due to the travel time involved. People will live and raise families where they work.

As long as space is perceived to be as barren as Antartica, it will get Anartica attention.

I suppose that an impending world shattering impact event with sufficient lead time might lead to some effort to colonize off world but minus that motivation, I doubt that there will ever be enough adventurous souls or population pressure to bring about Mars or moon colonies.

If we ever solve the FTL problem and find some earthlike planets out there the desire to colonize will become reality. Until then (300-400 years), assuming we find resources worth going after, we are probably looking at a few highly dependent asteroid colonies or Jovian moon colonies consisting of thousands and not millions of humans.

Forgetabout Mars, it will never happen imo.
