"Hate can be an appropriate response to evil"

No, hate just another evil. Greater evils justify lesser evils and all that. Often we are forced to choose between the lesser of evils.

Crime needs to be neutralized. Cancellation is the name of the game. Hot is balanced with cold. Evil is not balanced with hate. Evil is balanced with good. Good sometimes engages in hatred of greater evils, but as the good gets greater the hate disappears and is replaced with understanding.

Prejudice is born of hatred. If folks feel something is inferior, they justify hating it. Civil rights, suffrage came about by the recognition that not all things different are evil or inferior - they are just different.

When the right hate Islam - that is not the intelligent repsonse. When it justifies hatred because of heinous acts of brutality, that is still not the right response. Compassion, love and understanding are the only real tools we have in our arsenal to combat hatred, violence and ignorance.

Our engagement in Iraq will not be won by gunfire or bombs, but by reconstruction, schools, caring and a shared Coca Cola on a hot day.

Sure, policing and violence still are used to control greater violence - but these are short term cancellations - the region desperately needs the deeper longterm balances only brought by massive amounts of love, intelligence and compassion which will offset the hate, ignorance and cruelty which are all too prevalent in the populations of the region.
