Not an unreasonable assumption.

Most species have evolved some mechanism for preventing their rival's sperm from reaching their mate's eggs, or for frustrating the success of their rival's DNA. Among humans, there are chemical triggers which allow some sperm to perform ovulation, while others only function seems to be to prevent subsequent sperm from reaching the eggs at all, a sort of rear-guard action.

Many animals sequester their mates, and males of almost all species drive off rival males until conception is assured. If all else fails, you can kill offspring that our not yours, as in lion prides. It's questionable how these strategies help the race as a whole, but they certainly help the male's chances of having his DNA prevail. Evolution does not care, it's a random process, but if any of these strategies succeeds often enough, it gets passed on to future generations.

Isn't science wonderful?
