I just saw a documentary about him and it appears he was the best king we had. Our Constitution was the most liberal of its kind at the time (because it limited his power before he even accepted the role).

He also enabled Belgium to escape unhurt the 1848 revolution.

And he started a long tradition of the art of compromise.
