You do know that US citizens are expected to pay taxes even if they haven't lived in the US for decades, don't you?
Why not give up citizenship in a nation that one doesn't live in, and hasn't for many years? Would you like to pay taxes in two countries?
Raoul is basing his opinion on current behavior. As he pointed out, the Belgians have apologized for past behavior. Are we going to apologize for the stuff we have done, too?
He has stated a distaste for the national chauvanism associated with continuous and obsessive flag displays. You know something? For those of us who don't share the tendency to whip out a flag at the drop of a hat, continous flag displays have a different effect. After a while, I don't see them anymore. I don't reflect on their meaning. I look on them as a kind of commercial or lucky charm, the way silver crosses become a way to ward off vampires.
Flags? There's nothing special about flags flown every day, except in otherwise special places like courthouses, war memorials and cemetaries. Flags? Flown every day, they are a fashion statement. They are wallpaper. They are flying all the time because no one wants to go to the trouble of taking them down properly.
