What really amazed me about Google Earth

When I tried to find my house, I had to achieve a pretty low attitude before
anything became even vaguely recognizable, such as the street - and not
just because the particular images they used were not as sharp as, say,
in a US major city.

At a matter of just a few thousands of feet up, everything manmade seemed
so small. And I didn't have to go up too much higher before virtually nothing
made by humans was recognizable.

You can do the Pale Blue Dot thing or have a T-shirt with an artist's representation
of the Milky Way galaxy and an arrow stating You Are Here. You can even make
representative globes that show how dinky Sol is compared to Betelgeuse. But
trying to find something personal on a detailed globe of Earth and end up feeling
like you're using a microscope can really bring home just how small we are on a
cosmic scale - as well as shake your head at the idea that we're the most visible
and important things in the Universe.
