Nobody from either side of the aisle is going to be turning America into a totalitarian state. What the Left would do in power is eventually turn us into Old Europe, along with its moribund economy, entitlement culture, loss of tradition, immigration overflow, and dropping native birth rates. Not the gulags, but stagnation.
Enormous goverment, and enormous taxation. You think Bush can bust a budget, wait until you see what nationalized health care does. Do the numbers, based on our population and what Canada spends per capita.
Interestingly, many liberals I talk to see the idea of turning the U.S. into France or Germany as an enormous step forward. So it goes.
I am not happy with the current Republican Party, but as of now they are the only alternative to the modern Democrats. I wouldn't mind seeing both parties crank themselves back to what they were in the 1980s for the Republicans, and about the 1950s for the Democrats.
