Poverty chic

My theory is that this fashion trend was born of low-income kids inheriting their older brother's pants, and daring anyone to make something out of it.

What's weird as heck is that pants can now be bought at fashion shops that are designed to have the crotch at the knees. When I'm walking with my kids and see someone like this, I start whistling "It's A Jolly Holiday with Mary." My kids get it. I feel fairly safe nobody else will.

Took my daughter school shopping yesterday. Shopped at "The Gap" for jeans. When I was a kid, jeans were dark indigo, brand new, and stiff as a board when you put them on. If you forgot to wash them first, you got blue legs.

Then came "pre-washed." Then "pre-softened." Now, you buy them for fifty bucks pre-destroyed. The jeans look like somebody has been mucking horse stalls for years in them. Stains. Brown ones. The fabric is worn thin. They've got rips. They've got holes. The leg bottoms are shredded. Fifty bucks! WTF?

Sometimes I wonder what the foreign people who make these things are thinking. "What? We should rip them? Drag them through the pig pen? Why??"

You want to know why the world thinks America is nuts, maybe it isn't our foreign policy. Maybe it's that the world makes the things we buy.

And I thought Jamba Juice was amazing for selling grass juice for two bucks an ounce.
