You have something there... as cataclysmic as the event was for the era, its immediate victim was someone "larger than life" -- no less a son, father and husband than any man, but elevated by wealth and station (and elected office)
The soldier, the infant, the common citizen's death is reachable: they could be neighbors, or family, or one's self.
