A space colony doesn't need to be as big as O'Neill's nor even located at L5.....It's just a matter of finding a compromise between the smallest rotating space station possible capable of creating 1 G without noticeable Coryolis force and close enough to Earth so that space transport won't be too difficult and atmospheric drag too important.
