"And Mars is too alien to be colonized (too low a gravitiy, too much UV)which makes me believe O'Neill's space colonies will sooner or later come back in the pro-space groups."
I disagree Raoul. Eventually. People will start living on Mars. It will start with science bases that eventually become permanent communities. The gravity will not be a problem for those who want to stay. And over time, humans will start to evolve in that new environment.
Medical science may allow them to return to Earth if they want to, but even if they can’t ever set foot on the Earth, that is not a problem. I am mainly of European decent, but I doubt I’ll ever set foot in Europe. I would enjoy visiting Europe, but I don’t have to.
I think the same will be true of Martians. Sure, the Earth might be fun to visit, but they don’t have to. They’ll have their own world.
