That's the way it's done with things which don't come with a template for placing the bolts. It's your only choice, really.
Unless you are very, very accurate you are going to be drilling anyway. It's almost impossible to place the bolts in exactly the right place and completely vertically. The temptation is to place the bolts, then jigger them around to the exact location by leaning the exposed portions one way or another. Which creates problems unless there is a lot of slop in the holes.
Another option might be to pour the slab, and drop the plate onto a frame level with the wet concrete, dropping the bolts in, and wait for it to set up.
Or make a template from the plate you're going to anchor. But that's a bit "iffy" on an 8' X 8' pad.
Good luck.

Without a template, you put your anchor bolts in. Drill out the plate.

- Without a template, you put your anchor bolts in. Drill out the plate.
- Yet another method
- Here you go, have a protractor:
- If I remember enough geometry...
- Cut a circle out of paper, exactly the same size as your plywood circle
- Yes, there is a way!
- So... tell us what you're building! (n/t)
- Why can't you use a protractor?
- It's impossible
