Trying to be fair, I typed in www.dod.gov and .mil on the assumption that the Pentagon's official home page wouldn't be so blatantly political. I'd been thinking about traditions such as the "franking privilege" in Congress, and the long history of high government officials using taxpayer-funded communications media to further their own political agendas. It's still at heart an abuse of power and position, but there's a long pragmatic tradition of tolerating it as long as it's not too blatant, particularly in the area of making clear the distinction between personal politics and official government communications.
I was deeply disappointed to find myself redirected to defenselink.mil. On third thought, it looks like Rummie really is abusing his position and power to politicize the Pentagon for his own purposes.
It stinks to high heaven.
