What about many northern species.
Take the snow hare for instance. In the Winter it has a white coat of fur, but in Spring, it turns brown. Many other arctic animals also perform this trick. The changing of fur color isn't a conscious act, but is caused by a biofeedback within the organism. The changing environmental conditions trigger a physiological change at the intracellular level. How else would genes "know" to code for the appropriate proteins for white or brown fur unless there was some sort of mechanism for interaction with the environment?
