Do we really know environmental changes trigger the physiological changes? In many species, the latter occur according to some built-in timing mechanism, and the physiology changes mode even when the organism is kept in a controlled lab environment. I.e., would ptarmigan feathers change color if the bird was at a zoo located on the equator?
