I know just what you mean, I couldn't make a dent in the books, and the films, although visually gorgeous, seemed rather ponderous. All that Teutonic iconography and Nordic pomposity depressed me, sort of like Wagner on acid. It was one long Saxon "Roots", Aryan ubermensch knights who give their swords names and lumber around gloomily booming out things like "IT IS TIME".
