I ground through the Silmarillion, but basically gave most of the other books a pass.

If they had any balls, they'd find a Tolkein-loving professional writer good enough to write a completely original story around that universe, and have some fun with it. There's a lot of gaps prior to Lord of the Rings, and not a few after. The Unwritten Adventures of Bullroarer Took? The children of Sam, Pippin, and Merry? The Life and Times of Grizzly Radagast?
