True

As my old college professor used to say, science fiction is our way
of keeping the ancient deities, myths, and related stories alive in an
age of monotheism.

We really do still have trouble with the One God system. Just look at all
the godlike beings in SF and the Roman Catholic saints for every condition
and ailment. They intercede for us with the Big Guy, of course.

In the Twelfth Century CE, a temple to "Saint" Demeter was found in
rural Italy. There was no Saint Demeter; Demeter was the ancient
Roman god of grain and the harvest. So well into the Christian Era,
somebody right near Rome was still asking the ancient goddess for
a good crop.

That's another reason Satan got his horns, cloven hooves, pitchfork,
and such: People in Europe were still worshippin nature deities like
Pan, so the Christian Church made Satan look like Pan to dissuade
such behavior.
