My more simple understanding...

...is that with language and intellegence comes storytelling and improved technology. With improved food gathering technology comes time for pondering, and explaining.

The scientific method is a pretty complex idea that can't be invented for millenia. Prior to that invention, there aren't any hard rules to separate between what you know and what you think you know. Supernatural explanations for things are all that are available to answer the burning questions that pester humans. Questions like: why/how fire? why lightening? why won't my mom get up ever again? Religion just happens.

I am an agnostic, not an athiest. So note that the preceding does not preclude the possibility that we live in a universe created by a God and that this God has communicated with us exactly as one or more of our religions say. That humans invent religion does not mean that all religion is false.
