This is an ancient art: Photogrammetry.
Mapmakers and architects have been doing this since before there were computers, as long as photography has existed. It is also the base principle behind astrometric parallax measurements. You don't need software, just paper, pencil, a ruler, and knowledge of the scene geometry and optical system used to collect the image.
