This movie starts out with Farmer who is a "farmer" wearing a mercury type spacesuit without oxygen with the face mask down for what would be hours. They could have had him wearing some simple oxygen tank slung around his neck, but no.
Then throughout the movie they show a complete ignorance of simple physics. A few examples: The barn doesn't burn down the first time he launches. He has no oxidizer and two fuels kerosene and hydrazine which are easier to get than "rocket fuel"! Hydrazine? What happens when rocket first launch attempt falls over? The barn not only is not set to fire the roof passes the escape tower thru it without harming either.
We have all seen footage of Atlases falling back to the pad and blowing up. No rocket footage I've ever see has it falling back to the pad then turning sideways and flying that way for miles!
After the usual nonsense about family and not endangering the bread winner again. He starts over. But what is more amazing is and effort that took him ten years before, only takes weeks this time and Farmer then reuses the Mercury capsule he originally found were? Of course in a non existent rocket junkyard? This reuse after the capsule tumbles for about a half mile with no major damage to it?
Again in he second and successful launch he only has one tanker truck full of lox & kerosene fueling his Atlas-D? The rocket is shorter in the barn than in flight. The magic barn still doesn't burn down and of course he has problems in orbit that should have killed him. He is without power for at least 7 orbits or about 10 hours without air circulation or heaters and it is a connector in an easily to open panel that is the problem and oh that lost wedding ring in the front panel. But, what is truly amazing is how small his parachute is and he lands on land without splattering all over the place.
The sad part is non of this needed to be. A creative person could have come up with just as amazing effects for realistic events and carried the story along without BS. A metal shed next to the barn holding a full size Atlas-D would have been the first step.
All this science BS in a movie touted as a science based and encouraging children entering into the sciences. And please don't give me it is only a movie as an excuse. Science got short shrift here because it didn't actually matter to them.
Now don't get me started on the NewSpace BS they had going and how much injustice they fling at the FAA!
