Haven't seen it yet...
I suspect I won't give the science that much criticism if the movie is a good one.
I remember the old "Salvage One" movie. It was fun, and also involved a homemade spaceship. I remember the show postulated a "magic" fuel with enormous specific impulse, allowing the vehicle to rise gently all the way into space like an elevator.
