"Connections"
The first chapter of James Burke's book (and TV show) dealt with survival after the Big Collapse. The inspiration was the Great Blackout of 1965 (the show was from 1979). Yet we got past that, and other things since. The oncoming collapse has been a feature of even the non-religious parts of our culture for some time.
I have my own theories on the psychology of the current non-religious apocalypsism (is that a word?) including the article in Raoul's link, but I'd have more elbow room away from Space and over at Off Topic.
