The crews ate high-protein low-residue foods before and during the mission. At least the early Apollos had no sanitation facilities and the crew wore nappies for the 3-day mission to the Moon and back.
I don't know if thney extended the later missions by extending their intestinal fortitude, or whether they developed the high-tech plastic bag dump...
