We like to point out Rome as the example of things falling apart. But remember, the Romans kept it together for a thousand years, and half that time they were on top of the world. Even after the Fall, the Empire lived on in altered forms, both politically and geographically, and it still has an enormous cultural influence on us to this day.
We've been around for 235 years.
There's another thing to consider. When the empire collapsed, in each village and town there were still farmers and potters and blacksmiths, people who could weave cloth and raise livestock and build houses with what they had on hand. We can't do anything today without plugging into the power grid or hopping in our car. Most people today don't know how to make a fire without matches. I know I don't.
