Canada grows wheat.
Argentina grows apricots.
China grows rice.
USA grows oranges.
Why? Because it's more economical to grow those crops in those specific regions. But if you are born in Canada and you want to be a rice farmer, man are you screwed. That's what globalization does to the American dream. You no longer have a career choice. You might make a decent income, but will you be happy? Especially when you watch tv every day and see a foreigner halfway around the world doing the job you always dreamed of doing.
What protectionism did for China is made them self-sufficient. They have a segment of their population doing every damn thing imaginable. They even have a manned space program. They don't outsource anything. Period. If they can't make it, they figure out how to. Protectionism made them an industrial giant. They don't worry about not being able to do something in a globally competitive way, because international goods are taxed so that they don't compete with their domestic products and put their domestic businesses out of business.
