"Those of us who are enthusiastic about the exploration of space, and impatient with our failure to prosecute it vigorously, may very well consider why Clarke's Deep Range never materialized, even though it was a goal much closer to our capabilities than the Wild Black Yonder. I would be curious to hear your comments, ladies and gentlemen."
I haven't read the Deep Range, but it sounds interesting.
A significant benefit from the ocean might be farming it, rather than the hunting and gather mode we are in at the moment. In terms energy, there should vast oil reserve yet to be found, but Methane Hydrates deposits would be pretty important if we wanted to switch to more hydrogen economy, or simply wanted more natural gas used in our energy mix. How to mine Methane Hydrates deposits is going require a new technology to be developed.
In terms of science it seems there is a lot to be discovered about the ocean.
The ocean in general sort of reminds me of the Maya civilization in which they never developed roads and used the wheel.
