Actually, it was "Bicentennial Man," although I had to look it up to be sure myself.
I didn't see the short story (haven't read it in a while) as a tragedy, but as a triumph of humanity over sterile immortality. The robot in that story made the same choice Arwen Evenstar made in "Lord of the Rings," and I think he may have been better off for it.
I agree that this theme was pretty much buried in the movie, although Williams deserves a lot of credit for the work he put into the role. I don't know how much of the role's problems involved Williams injecting himself into it, or (more likely) how much the writers wanted to see some "Robin Williams" in the character. It would probably have worked better as an hour-long episode of "The Twilight Zone" or something.
While the man turns out some tripe, he's got enough good work in the bag that he doesn't have to prove anything. Frankly, I think he's still looking for his acting niche.
