Is why so many people want so badly to believe that some unstoppable, evil conspiracy is ruling the planet. Any reasoning person who actually believed the world was in the grip of such forces without a hope of changing things probably wouldn't even get out of bed in the morning. Yet conspiracy fans actually bend over backwards to show that this stuff exists.
It would be interesting to survey conspiracy nuts and find out how many subscribe to a formal religion.
My theory is that the human mind has a built-in aversion to chaos. Religion is one way of dealing with this. In absence of that, it's not surprising that others would create the idea of all-powerful human (or otherwise) forces, even evil ones, to stave off the ghastly idea that nobody is actually in charge of the world.
I've wondered in the past why totalitarianism seems to have been the "ground state" for human societies throughout history. My theory probably explains that, too. Freedom is inherently chaotic.
