That Heinlein's entire book was written to show was that wars are sometimes anything but pointless.

I hope a lot of people picked up the book after the movie came out. Unfortunately, I suspect a lot more people saw the movie and figured that Heinlein must have been a fascist. I suspect they wouldn't have dared make that movie while Heinlein was alive.
