Could you (or someone) explain this more clearly:

Tapping a conducting tether for energy extracts it from the orbital energy of the object itself, so that's a bit self-defeating isn't it?

I'm not sure what you mean - how is magnetic induction coupled to orbital kinetic energy? Are you saying there would be some drag involved as the tether moves through the ionosphere? What am I missing here? The wording isn't quite clear to me.
