Your observation that the path of any impactor can be "tweaked" with current technology is lost on Sheep.
This delusioin is connected with those of an Earth-like Mars; running around Mars' near vacuum in pressure suits; Mars can be terraformed despite the radiation levels; the local citizens will accept large nuclear reactors launched over their homes; the impact hazard is small; the current funding for detection is adequate; etc...
No doubt that it is the "colonization" aspect of Zubrin's scheme that makes it so appealing - each individual's reason for the need to escape will be personal to them, of course...
Throw in a couple of tens of millions for "publicity", and a willing audience, et voila...
Is "mass psychosis" the correct term? Perhaps la francais has a more elegant term? "mississippi"?
