Zubrin does use the colonizing Mars argument for his Mars direct case.

I wouldn't be astonished he hasn't been able to reach more than the space enthusiasts groups, because of that.

Exploring and colonizing are two very different things. One is romantic, not profit oriented, the other reminds us of an ugly past.
