re: First Person POV

I don't remember enough about the terms any more to be sure I'm using them right.

Harry Potter was third person, but told only from inside Harry's head. I'm sure there's a proper term for that.

A lot of good stories I've read are first person, i.e. "I went over to the window and saw..." Some of my favorites include the Nero Wolfe series. Again, it takes a skilled writer to feed things the protagonist doesn't know into the story, and usually Stout just uses exposition. The cleverest gimmick is Archie's eidetic memory, which allows Wolfe to be "on the scene" when he rarely is.

The Sherlock Holmes stories are told in the first person, too. Naturally from Watson's point of view, since he represents the reader in the story, who needs to be dragged along by Holmes along with Watson. Doyle wrote a couple of stories from Holmes' point of view, and they fell pretty flat.

Personally, I'm not sure I have the skills to write first person. In any case, I have two kids who were to star in my book, and there was no good way to do a first person in that case without making one of them cranky.
