The author's poorly disguised, pro-government funding of human spaceflight perspective is the one that's not "extreme," supposedly. He also very quickly conflates government funding of human spaceflight with human spaceflight in general. People like me who think the NASA manned program is ridiculous and should be eliminated feel very differently about private efforts.
His solution - continue the existing, vampiric parasitism of government-funded manned spaceflight on the other branches of worthwhile activities - is the opposite of a solution.
A real solution would be a real Chinese wall between the budgets of manned spaceflight and actual space science, not one that Griffin violated in the last two years to support Bush Administration nonsense, and leave private spaceflight alone.
If they did that, I wouldn't give any more criticism to the Government Department of Stupid Human Spaceflight Tricks than to any other wasteful program, and that would be an improvement from the author's perspective - a neutral sum game.
