Radio silence

A question for you radio heads out there.

I have a battery operated portable radio I plan to use for hurricane season (I was without power for 11 days during Wilma). My question is, can I extend battery life by using headphones instead of the speakers? Also, is there a power advantage in using the little button phones that came with it, or is it an equivalent power drain to use my big headphones with an adaptor plug?
