Lithium batteries.

As the man said, get some. You'll never rely upon alkaline for emergency situations again.

They are lighter, last 3 to 6 times as long, in my experience, and have a very long shelf life. I purchase AAs for $1 each in lots of 50 from cheapbatteries.com They also work well in cold weather, not an issue usually in the Southern US.

I use them to power my camera, a 6 oz. portable shortwave radio I take backpacking, and charge the cell phone and bluetooth earpiece I take. And the GPS, but read below.

One warning. They will not work at full voltage in 4 watt GMRS or CB radios, in which the final power output is voltage-dependent. If they did work the output would be over the legal limit. And they won't work at full voltage in Garmin GPSs, at least the 76 CSx. I've talked with their technical department and they say that there are components inside which can't handle the higher current. I use the lithium in the radio or camera before moving them over to the GPS, and they still last 4 times as long as alkaline. However, in my experience, when they go, they're gone. High drain until a very quick end. (I don't know if the literature would support that, it's anecdotal, my experience.)

Measuring the voltage in new lithium v. alkaline it comes out to about 1.75 - 1.78 to 1.64 or so. Apparently that is significant when linked in series.

Good luck.
