I don't know how much of this is true, but I do know the evangelicals are making big inroads into the chaplain corps, and especially so at the service academies where our officers receive their training. The chaplains are quickly morphing from a non-denominational spiritual and family counseling service into a fundamentalist pep squad, determined to not only get rid of the "padres" who are non-Christian and non-Protestant, but those who are not sufficiently zealous in their religious views.
When I was in the service, the chaplains conducted (completely optional) non-denominational religious services, officiated at funerals, and counseled GIs with money, family, discipline and girlfriend problems. Even the non-believers trusted them and took advantage of their advice and support. We had a sky pilot on our ship, and I don't even recall whether he was Jew or Christian, Protestant or Catholic, but we all liked him. He reminded me of the one on "M.A.S.H.". The report you linked us to is not the first time I've heard of this new alarming new development.
