REB's post below reminded me of a couple of ideas I have had for stories. I have no ability to convert ideas into complete fiction but a couple ideas have been like a tune in my mind.
The first is a short fantasy comedy based on the old formula of the evil power that has been imprisoned for eons and is somehow released by some goob to rule the world. The evil power guy masses all of his magic spells and monster warriors and sets the date for his invasion. He is met by a platoon of special forces and is defeated in about fifteen minutes. Retreating hastily back to the underworld he realizes that technology has trumped magic. We always see the titanic battle that we are doomed to lose but we manage to trick the bad guy in the end. I would like to see one where we just kick his ass.
The other is a time travel story where a time machine has been developed but it requires huge amounts of mass to convert to energy to move back in time. Moving backwards just a few minutes takes say a mountain of mass. Obviously the ability to go back and change history even after few minutes is obviously a strategic plus so the rich and powerful start employing the time machine and huge chunks of mass start disappearing. Greed and power lust threatens the existence of Earth and even the solar system as the time travelers race into space to use asteroids and moons after destroying over 10% of the Earths mass.
Moving back in time years requires a cosmic quantity of mass. Is the universe big enough for time travel?
More scifi/fantasy story arcs anyone?
