Ever see your story written by someone else?

For years, I've been mentally pursuing a plot line set in the Front Range of Colorado and the energy transmission experiments conducted here by Mr Tesla. Possible arcs included time travel, time splitting (copies of a person stuck in several time periods (ala an old Dr Who episode)), and of cloaking technology. Geologists, mining and specific minerals would be involved. Write about what you know, right?

Well I just be damned if that %$^$% Thomas Pynchon didn't include several of these elements in his latest novel. I've read it twice now, and both times I've laughed outloud and shook my fist in the air ... "Damn you Pynchon!"

But on the other hand it has been fun reading elements of stories I've considered in settings I know very well as written by a master. He writes it better than I ever could.

So now, in my musings, I am incorporating elements and characters from Against the Day into my story arc. At least as walk-ons. Which is fine by me, 'cause I'm also working another, rather more famous novel (that is partially set in Colorado) into the story. I'll leave that title to speculation.
