City buses suck on fuel consumption because of their "stop-go" cycles. They are ideal for electric propulsion, and unlike large trucks, there is at least some work being done on this.

Some large cities, like San Francisco, run conventional-looking buses powered by overhead electric lines like the old trolleys.
