Hybrid trucks
I am amazed that so little work has gone into this. You would think that a true hybrid design would be ideal for the sort of work a big truck does (heavy loads at low speeds and steady cruise). It's why standard diesel locomotives are true hybrids.
If someone build an SUV with heavy-duty electric motors in the drive train and a small gas/diesel engine to charge the system, it would outperform anything else out there.
